Essential Oil Safety

 

If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, there are certain guidelines you must follow. Please use common sense. Start gradually, and find what works best for you and your family. More is not always better.

1. When using essential oils always keep a bottle for pure vegetable oil or massage oil handy. These can be used to dilute essential oils if they cause skin irritation or discomfort. If you are just starting out always dilute your essential oils.

2. Store essential oils away from light in a cool location, with the bottle tightly closed.Properly stored oils will maintain there potency for many years.

3. Keep essential oils out of reach of children.

4. Essential oils rich in menthol (Peppermint) should not be used on the throat or neck of children under the age of 30 months.

5. Certain oils such as: angelica, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, tangerine, and other citrus oils are photosensitive. Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided after use.

6. Never drop essential oils directly into ears and keep away from eye area. If you get essential oils in your eyes, flush with vegetable oil, never use water.

7. Pregnant women should consult a health care professional before use.

8. Those with high blood pressure or epilepsy should consult a health care professional before use.

9. People with allergies should always do a skin test on a sensitive area, such as the inside of the upper arm .

10. For bath use mix essential oils with a bath gel base for easy dispersal. Putting essential oils into the bath without a dispersing agent may can discomfort on sensitive skin.

11. Keep essential oils away from open flames.

12. Always use caution when applying essential oils to skin that has been exposed to cosmetics, personal care products other than Young Living, soaps, and cleaners containing synthetic chemicals. Essential oils may react with such chemicals and cause skin irritation.
